Do you like the hat in our image?  It may not make it to the Fashion on the Fields this racing carnival but it has an interesting story.  This photo was taken at the annual rice planting festival at Sumiyoshi shrine in Osaka.  The wearer is one of the shrine maidens in the festival’s parade of people in costume from the Edo period.  In Japan this colourful festival is part of the  important preparation for planting rice in the hope for a successful future harvest.
